The economic downturn has been credited with creating a surge of interest among young Canadians in TEFL placements overseas.
Organisations offering work opportunities in the field claim applications have soared as much as 400 per cent since late 2008, Reuters reports.
Ben Glickman, co-founder of Vancouver-based Footprints Recruiting, told the news source his company is experiencing 100 more applications a week as unemployment in the country reaches its highest level in 11 years.
Mr Glickman said: "We definitely see economic causalities come through the door. You see a lot of fallout from the financial industry, where people that were involved in finances are now teaching overseas."
Meanwhile, TEFL achievements in the Canadian city of Calgary have been marked in an 802-stair fundraising climb.
The event was organised by students and graduates from Calgary Police Service’s (CPS) English as a Second Language (ESL) programme earlier this month and saw more than 50 people take part, with each step representing the progress they have made so far to become police officers.
