Teen taking TEFL fundraising seriously

Posted 30 Jul 2009

Bag packing, cake stalls and pub quizzes are just a few of the ideas a Lincolnshire teenager has been trying to raise money for a TEFL trip to Malaysia.

Naomi Abeyseker, aged 16, is heading to the country during her summer holiday next year, where she will be teaching English at a school in Sabah, reports the Grantham Journal.

Before jetting off, however, she aims to raise enough money to not only cover her travel expenses, but to help out her prospective students too.

Ms Abeyseker told the newspaper: "I am hoping to raise in excess of £2,500, which would also help with the building costs of classrooms and buy learning resources for the school.

The teenager has currently raised just over £1,000, some £130 of it during a recent quiz and raffle at a local pub.

Earlier this month the Malaysian government announced it is scrapping a controversial English language scheme in maths and science lessons from 2012.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19288495-ADNFCR
