Teaching careers are becoming more popular among young people concerned jobs in other sectors are too competitive or insecure.
Research by High Fliers found classroom positions topped a poll investigating the job aspirations of new graduates, rising two places from third in 2008.
Meanwhile, the economic downturn has also changed young adults’ perception of investment banking, with the career path choice tumbling from second place to ninth on the list this year.
However, a large proportion of final-year university students admitted they are deferring employment altogether.
More than a quarter plan to stay on for further study, while 52 per cent believed job prospects for their demographic were very limited.

Chief executive Richard Oliver was quoted by the news source as saying: "Teaching is one of the most rewarding gap year placements as it enables people to really understand the local culture and immerse themselves in the local community."
