Teaching overseas is the favourite way for people planning to take a gap year to make money, according to a new survey.
Figures released by the association of UK gap year organisations, Year Out Group, found that teaching in a foreign country through a TEFL course or similar is top of the list for many people planning a year out, with a 20 per cent rise in interest in the past year alone.
According to the poll, the number of placements for teaching courses while on a gap year has risen by a fifth in the last 12 months, with many people recognising teaching as a potential career.
As the recession deepens, more people are beginning to recognise that teaching jobs are not as affected by the economy as professions in the private sector, while teaching a TEFL course on a gap year can provide good experience ahead of a career in teaching.
"We have noticed a marked increase in the number of requests for teaching placements in recent months," Richard Oliver, chief executive of the not-for-profit Year Out Group, told TravelBite.co.uk.
Meanwhile, a new website has recently been launched that aims to provide TEFL teachers in England with a new resource.
EnglishLanguageSchools.co.uk will enable students learning English as a second language to compare courses.
