Teaching profession weathering the recession

Posted 18 Jun 2009

The education sector is continuing to thrive where other employment opportunities are diminishing in the recession, it has been commented.

Tom Usher, research fellow at the Institute for Employment Studies (IES) says graduates are struggling to find work in many sectors but education appears to be weathering the downturn.

He comments: "I think the current crop of graduates are going to find it exceptionally difficult to find a job that matches their expectations.

"One other area where employment is still increasing is in the public sector. This includes jobs related to the public sector and education."

His words may interest prospective TEFL teachers who are eyeing careers in schools following their placements abroad.

In total, the number of jobs available in the UK fell by 108,000 between December 2008 and March 2009 to reach 31.19 million, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics earlier this month.
