Teaching English in Asia could ‘open doors’ for students

Posted 15 Jun 2010

Teaching English in Asia could help better the lives of students by affording them a greater number of language-related opportunities.

According to Power International English Language Testing System, some people in Asia are failing to show sufficient aptitude in the English language to secure jobs abroad.

With Filipinos said to be struggling particularly, people looking to teach English abroad could find the republic a uniquely challenging and rewarding place to visit.

Bob Green, head educational coordinator of Power IELTS, said that the Philippines is, as a nation, reasonably proficient in English, but that this does not necessarily translate to individual language comprehension good enough for international work.

He said: "Filipinos may have a higher awareness of English than many other nationalities, however this does not extrapolate to the conclusion that they are fluent, cohesive and coherent speakers of the English language."

Foreign workers need to pass International English Language Testing System exams in order to secure a job in countries such as Britain and the US.
