A teacher who uses micro-blogging service Twitter to set homework has picked up a top prize at teaching awards in the south-west.
Daniel Roberts, assistant head at Saltesh.net community school, won the Next Generation Learning award for the way he incorporates technology in class, the Guardian reports.
As well as Twitter, Mr Roberts has also helped set up a pigcam to screen a live animal birth on the internet and overseas daily videocasts.
He told the newspaper: "We’re encouraging all staff to let the kids take responsibility for their own learning. They know what to use the technology for.
"Some teachers say: ‘I don’t know what Flickr is, I don’t know how to use Twitter’. And we’re saying: ‘Well, the students do, let them do it’."
In related technology news, the Guardian reports a number of British universities are encouraging students to create a virtual campus and sense of solidarity during distance learning TEFL courses by hosting interactive websites boasting discussion boards and podcasts.
