People teaching English in Bolivia may be lucky enough to witness the Fiesta of the Virgin of Copacabana on August 5th.
The town is an important pilgrimage and thousands gather there on August 5th to pay penitence to the patron saint of Bolivia – Virgen de La Candalaria.
Whatsonwhen describes the event as the country’s equivalent of Christmas so those teaching English in Bolivia could witness a special event.
Many pilgrims wear trinkets of items that they would like to receive from the Virgin. Some believe that she will grant their wishes on this day.
There is likely to be someone on the street corners selling tiny cows, cars or motorbikes as these represent what some visitors want.
Others hire a beggar or blind man since they are believed to have special powers when they chant over incense – they can ensure that the Virgin grants the person’s wish.
Copacabana is the main Bolivian town on the shore of Lake Titicaca and it has a 16th century shrine for the patron saint.
