Teach English in Japan and enjoy sumo wrestling

Posted 29 Apr 2010

Sumo wrestling is a huge part of Japanese culture and those teaching English in Tokyo can see the cream of the crop go head-to-head in a competition next month.

The May Grand Sumo Tournament, which is held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Hall, sees the country’s best wrestlers square up in front of raucous crowds.

One star who is hoping to shine at the event is Baruto Keito, who will be making his debut.

"I’m the new ozeki Baruto. I am planning to do my best to take the title," he stated.

Those teaching English in Tokyo will see the huge variety of moves and manoeuvres involved in sumo wrestling, which is the most popular sport in Japan.

John Wocher, executive vice-president at Kameda Medical Center in Kamogawa, recently urged visitors to the country to spend time learning the language and immersing themselves in the culture to get the most out of it.
