Every year, countries across South America and parts of Spain commemorate the Virgin Carmen who heroically escaped from the conquistador Diego De Almagro and restored the power of her nation.
In La Tirana, locals celebrate the heroism of an Incan priest’s daughter by putting on masks, swirling capes and spangly outfits.
Visitors can also witness dragon dancers perform a mesmerising and synchronised dance against the backdrop of the Andes and the desert.
More than 40,000 people gather in the small town to give thanks to the patron saint of Chile and songs are performed by the crowd all day.
Those teaching English in Peru can also witness this festival as the country celebrates it too. For five days dance troupes perform in a tribute to the saint.
On the main day, the Virgin is borne aloft in a procession through the streets and those present are blessed, while demons are scared away.
