Teach English abroad ‘but do your research first’

Posted 27 May 2010

It is important those planning on teaching English abroad do thorough research on places they are considering working in, it has been claimed.

PDixon, writing on the i-to-i Chalkboard, said that this should be part of the preparations people make before deciding on a country.

"Find out what it is like to live there rather than visit, look at possible areas you might want to live or be near," he stated.

Another recommendation is to learn basic phrases in the language of the country one plans to work in.

Those looking for TEFL jobs who are worried they have insufficient experience can volunteer with a local youth group to build some confidence, the writer added.

Newly-qualified EFL teachers may find that Mexico and Ecuador are good places to begin their career.

According to the How to Learn German blog, both countries have an infrastructure established for EFL teachers with little classroom experience.
