Career changers have been told that teaching "could be the answer" to dreams of a stable and rewarding job.
The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) told the Guardian that the recent surge in applications for teaching training courses reflects the range of benefits a classroom career holds.
Chief executive Graham Holley insisted the job is particularly likely to attract mature people who already have some experience of employment.
He told the newspaper: "It offers a unique mix of rewards and enables career changers to use talents honed in their current job – from communication and leadership skills to team management."
Mr Holley added that the relative "stability" of teaching is also an attraction, especially in the current economic downturn.
