‘Taking the right drugs’ can prevent catching malaria abroad

Posted 09 Jul 2010

Taking the right drugs and avoiding mosquito bites should prevent malaria as Cheryl Cole is a rare case.

On July 6th, singer Cheryl Cole was diagnosed with malaria after a trip to Tanzania despite taking the correct medication.

Professor David Hill, director of the National Travel Health Network and Centre, believes Ms Cole’s case will raise awareness of the condition and that she may be the exception to the role.

People who want to teach English in Africa or Asia, where the disease can be prevalent, can prevent catching the infectious disease.

Professor Hill said: “It is a fair statement that if you avoid the mosquitoes and take the right drug for the right amount of time then you shouldn’t get malaria.”

He added that there are about 1,500 cases of malaria in the UK each year and those travelling back from Africa can come back with it.

Professor Hill also warned that malaria develops fast and if any symptoms are felt, medical help should be sought as soon as possible.
