Matthew Freeman, head of young people and communities at Working Links, said on July 20th that worklessness can contribute towards ill-health, unhappiness and depression.
If a youngster is unemployed or out of education they may consider taking a TEFL course and learn how to teach English abroad as a way of keeping busy.
Mr Freeman said: “Official figures released last year showed that only 20 per cent of people with mental health problems were in employment … with people who move into work tending to report substantial improvements in mental health.”
Furthermore, teaching English abroad may help those dealing with depression as it will get them working and exploring a new country.
On July 7th, the Audit Commission found that as many as one in four young adults may be outside school, work or training and that the numbers vary across the country.
It found that about 85,000 youngsters had been out of education or employment for more than six months, which could lead to a future of criminality.
