According to the Association for Graduate Careers Advisory Service (AGCAS), students are less attracted by high salaries than they are to jobs they think they will enjoy.
Learning how to teach English abroad through a TEFL course could open the door to an enjoyable job.
Tom Davie, director of professional development on the board of AGCAS and deputy head of careers at the University of Durham, states that students from high-flying universities could command large salaries but choose not to.
He said: "There are more students considering careers based on corporate social responsibility, on their beliefs and values, on their work-life balance."
Graduate Prospects found that almost one in five graduates were attracted to their job as it seemed interesting, 13 per cent considered location and seven per cent were drawn to their companies because of training opportunities.
