Taiwanese schools assess storm damage

Posted 27 Aug 2009

TEFL teachers heading to Taiwan can be reassured most schools damaged by Typhoon Morakot will be fixed in time for the new school year.

According to the country’s Central News Agency, some 1,312 schools in central and southern Taiwan were affected by the storm.

The extent of the damage has been estimated at NT$2.59 billion (£48.6 million) but education minister Cheng Jei-cheng said on Tuesday (August 25th) most will be repaired by the start of term next week.

However, 18 junior high and elementary schools in Nantou and Kaohsiung which were completely destroyed by the storm will take longer to rebuild, displacing around 1,335 students.

Chung Hwa University of Medical Technology in Tainan also sustained major damage and will not be open this autumn, the minister said.

Earlier this week (August 25th), the Taiwanese branch of World Vision revealed it is donating over NT$1.2 billion (£22.5 million) to aid rebuilding and rehabilitation programmes in the country following the typhoon.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19333947-ADNFCR
