Survival skills for teaching English abroad

Posted 17 Jun 2010

Emma Foer wrote in her blog for i-i, that there are several things people who want to teach English abroad should learn.

The main thing is to look interested in what the pupils have to say and make the classes enjoyable, even if the subject matter is dull, she suggests.

Another survival tip is to act like a teacher. Emma wrote: "Your students needn’t know you and the rest of the teaching staff throw paper aeroplanes at each other in break time and run in late to class due to falling asleep in the staff room (from partying too hard the night before)."

Retaining a sense of humour is essential as children can be testing at times. Making a joke can salvage a difficult situation such as a phone going off in class, she added.

Tefl courses can teach someone the basics about teaching English abroad such as communicating with students, planning lessons and grammar.
