Stricter restrictions on visas for foreign students

Posted 06 Sep 2010

The British government announced a crackdown on the number of youngsters entering the UK on student visas today (September 6th).

Immigration minister Damian Green has stated that the number of foreign students in this country needs to be curbed.

He said: "We cannot assume that everyone coming here has skills that the UK workforce cannot offer and we will not make Britain prosperous in the long-term by telling our own workers not to bother to learn new skills as we can bring them all in from overseas."

One of the restrictions on student visas could be that they are only given to those who wish to study for a degree rather than for A-levels or GCSES.

Another criteria that has been suggested is that all potential foreign students need to pass an English language test before being admitted into the country.

If this is imposed, people teaching English abroad may be in higher demand as they can help foreigners learn the language to a high standard.

Figures from the Home Office show that 362,000 foreign students were allowed to enter the UK in the year to June – a 35 per cent increase on 2009, reports the Telegraph.
