South Korea to ‘become Asian Film Hub’

Posted 26 Jul 2010

People teaching English in South Korea next year could find themselves in one of the cultural capitals of Asia.

In September 2011, a new film centre worth 162.4 billion won will be completed in Busan, reports Asahi.com.

The South Korean government hopes that this new centre, which will show movies made in the country and train animators, will make the region a film hub.

It will also be the site for the Pusan International Film Festival, which began in 1996, and is scheduled to take place in October 2011.

Last year the number of world premieres at the event reached 98 compared to the Tokyo International Film Festival, which only showed 26.

Therefore, people teaching English in South Korea next year could see world premieres and meet movie directors all in one place.

The event is partially funded by the Korea Creative Content Agency. Lee Jae-Woong, president of the agency told the news provider: “Improving culture will improve the image of a nation and heighten the product value of manufactured goods.”

South Korean culture has been largely influenced by its neighbour China. However, it started gaining international recognition for its films from 1999, following the success of Shiri.
