‘Seven youngsters’ chasing each clearing place

Posted 19 Aug 2010

With a record number of A grades (27 per cent) some youngsters have missed out on a university place by just one grade after A level results were released today.

According to UCAS, a total of 180,000 students will be hoping to obtain a place at university through clearing compared to just 135,000 last year.

This could amount to seven youngsters chasing each place as the Telegraph found that the number of clearing places available has dropped by as much as 50 per cent.

Furthermore, those who narrowly missed out on their first choice by one grade could be faced with a unprecedented struggle to get into university.

However, young people should not despair if they have missed out on a place as there are plenty of options open to them including taking a TEFL course.

A TEFL course can be completed within 120 hours and it trains people how to teach English abroad, which will probably lead to a job overseas.

A spokesman for the University of East London, told the news provider: "Competition for places is likely to be fierce this year and applicants will need to be prepared to call institutions as early as possible on results day to secure a place."
