Teaching standards will only improve with "slow reform" rather than quick pay rises, an expert from the Institute of Education claims.
Professor Dylan Wiliam warns salary hikes will not offer a quick-fix solution, despite claims they will encourage more high fliers into the profession.
"Raising teacher pay is a very weak way of improving the profession," he explains.
"Until we make sure that we are getting the right people into the profession then we might end up just paying bad teachers more as well as paying good teachers more."
Instead, Professor Wiliam advocates a longer-term strategy whereby teachers are encouraged to constantly refresh and improve their skills long after qualifying – a suggestion that could interest those eyeing a TEFL career.
His comments follow a recent report by Politeia, published earlier this month, which suggested teachers in England are among the least educated in Europe and more likely to drop out of the profession at the start of their career.
