Recession blamed for unemployed Scottish graduates

Posted 19 Aug 2010

The number of Scottish graduates that were unemployed last year increased from six per cent to seven per cent but this was still better than expected.

A further 19 per cent of graduates decided to continue with their education and took a Masters or PHD due to the lack of jobs available.

The Herald Scotland reports that a spokesman for Universities Scotland stated that these figures reflected the flexibility of institutions on August 17th.

He said: "These figures are coming from a time when the recession was developing and, while it shows that fewer went into work, the changes are comparatively small and a lot better than predicted."

Furthermore, it shows that having a degree can protect people from the recession.

However, if a graduate has been unlucky and is unemployed, taking a TEFL course could be a positive step as it can train them to teach English abroad and provide them with job opportunities.

The Department for Education revealed on August 18th that the number of young people not in education, employment or training had declined in the second quarter of the year.
