Brits working in retail may want to think about alternatives, such as a TEFL course which trains people to teach English abroad, as their job may be at risk.
According to Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, retailers of all sizes will be looking to reduce their costs, which may be acheved through cutting back on staff.
He said: "Our research is saying that 10,000 shops are going to go this year, so it could well be that we don't lose just 10,000 retail jobs but we lose a lot more than that – double or treble."
Larger retailers may also want to reduce the number of outlets it has, which may also lead to job losses, Mr Bamfield added.
Therefore, thousands of people could be faced with unemployment. One of the ways in which they could get back into employment is through passing a TEFL course.
Mr Bamfield made these comments after the BRC-Bond Pierce Retail Jobs Monitor was released on January 27th.
It found that 38 per cent of retailers were planning to decrease staff numbers in 2011, compared to 13 per cent in the same period last year.
