The number of people choosing to take online learning programmes for qualifications such as TEFL courses could be about to see a spike after a Canadian province announced that it will be opening it first web university.
Internet education is gaining in popularity across the world, with several institutions in the UK and US proving particularly successful and this scheme in Ontario becoming the latest to emerge, according to the Canadian Press.
Annette Phillips, a spokesperson for the minister of colleges, training and universities told the newswire: "The ministry is working with college and universities to look at what they’re doing that has been really successful and how to improve the current system."
As yet there has been no indication as to the specifics of the Ontario Online Institute, but its presence shows that more people are turning to such online learning to fit their education around other obligations in their lives.
One academic recently told the Times that such programmes often see students forming internet communities, allowing peers to support each other.
