One in four UK lap dancers has a degree

Posted 31 Aug 2010

One in four lap dancers in the UK have a degree, with some graduates choosing this career path as it pays better than other alternatives, such as bar work.

That is according to new research conducted by the University of Leeds, which found that a lap dancer can earn as much as £232 a shift.

However, an alternative to this could be teaching English abroad, as the study also raised concerns about the safety of the dancers.

Some dancers were open to financial exploitation by the clubs and others faced a lack of security.

Dr Teela Sanders, one of the researchers of the study, told the Independent: "There is an issue about whether these women become trapped in the job because of the money. I think people often stay longer than they want."

One of the ways in which a woman could get out of lap dancing and still find employment is by taking a TEFL course.

These courses can be completed online and cost about £143. After taking the course, the person can teach English abroad, which also pays money.
