One fifth of Irish people would emigrate to find work

Posted 15 Jul 2010

Over one in five Irish people would be willing to move abroad to find a job, revealed the Eurobarometer survey, released on July 14th.

This was due to the downturn in the Irish labour market and more than a third felt that their chances would be better abroad.

A possible overseas career could be teaching English in places such as Argentina, Thailand or Morocco. This can be achieved by taking a TEFL course.

Martin Territt, director of the European Commission Representation in Ireland, told the Irish Times, that finding ways to secure jobs across Europe would help the country’s economy.

He said: “Europeans need to feel comfortable that they have the right skills sets as well as social support to go out to where the jobs that best match their profiles are.

”For this to happen our grasp of European languages needs to improve and younger people need to take advantage of study and training opportunities abroad."

Teaching English abroad, particularly in Japan and China, is expected to grow in popularity by 12 to 15 per cent this year alone.
