Number of teachers in Singapore to be expanded by 2015

Posted 01 Sep 2010

The education ministry in Singapore wishes to expand its teaching workforce by ten per cent to 33,000 by 2015.

Academies will be set up in order to train Singaporeans how to teach and some of these will be dedicated to the English language, reports channelnewsasia.

The main focus will be on physical education and teachers but some TEFL-qualified people may be required to teach English to those attending an academy.

Therefore, people who have taken a TEFL course may be in demand to pass on their English teaching skills to Singaporeans who wish to do the same.

Dr Ng Eng Hen, education minster and second minister for defence, told the news provider: "We want to increase the workforce, the teaching workforce, because there are clear educational needs.

"That's understandable. But we are not going to sacrifice quality to get the numbers."

Another way in which the government plans to develop education in Singapore is by investing around $4.8 million (£3.1 million) into each primary school so they can improve their infrastructure.

Singapore is an island situated off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and has a population of around five million people.
