New skills could fill any gaps in a CV and ‘help candidate stand out’

Posted 12 Jul 2010

An article in the Guardian on July 7th revealed that UK employers now typically read 70 CVs for one vacancy, making competition fierce.

CV advice service, the Write Stuff, suggests adding new skills and filling in any gaps between education and employment to help a graduate stand out from the crowd.

Taking a TEFL course could help those who have just left university to acquire people and communication skills while teaching English abroad could give them practical work experience.

Peter Panayotou, senior consultant for the Write Stuff, said: “It is good for employers to see you were doing something rather than just sitting around waiting for opportunities to come to you. Any skills you can add can’t do any harm.”

He added that the most common reason for not getting an interview was by not proof-reading a resume and relying on spell-check on Word can be a mistake.

Furthermore, a TEFL course may not be directly related to a future job but everything provides useful skills.
