The Home Office has announced the new points system for skilled foreign workers – which requires them to have a good command of the English language – has seen early success.
Under tier two of the new system (for skilled foreign workers) the criteria they must match also includes the ability to support themselves for the first month and to have the potential to earn £24,000 or more.
Phil Woolas, border and immigration minister, said: "It is crucial that only those foreign workers we need come here and this new system will ensure that."
Since June, businesses in Britain have been able to apply to become a registered sponsor before they can employ people from abroad.
Around 4,875 companies have been successful so far by proving that foreign workers match the criteria and the position is not wanted by a UK resident.
Earlier this month, the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education launched the Right to a Voice campaign to help asylum seekers attend free English classes.
Rather than teaching English abroad, people with who have completed a TEFL course might want to help foreign workers with their language skills in this country.
