New passport launched for British travellers

Posted 25 Aug 2010

Brits travelling abroad will soon be required to make use of a brand new passport after it was unveiled today by the Identity and Passport Service.

The ten- year identity document will be issued from October and features enhanced security, as well as images from across the UK.

These will include the White Cliffs of Dover, the Gower Peninsula, Ben Nevis and the Giant's Causeway.

One of a number of new security features, the new images will be produced through a special printing technique designed to mark them out from forgeries and protect Brits who have their passports stolen while abroad.

Another new security measure entails moving the chip storing holder's details into the cover, where it will be less accessible without damaging the passport.

Sarah Rapson, chief executive of the Identity and Passport Service, said: "The new passport features a host of scenes from across the UK.

"Through its combination of physical and electronic security features, the UK passport remains one of the most secure and trusted documents in the world, meeting rigorous international standards."

A secondary image of the holder will also be added to the observations page, while holograms will be added to the transparent covering protecting the holder's personal details.ADNFCR-2167-ID-800040572-ADNFCR
