The National Citizen Service was unveiled by prime minister David Cameron on July 22nd.
It is designed to provide school leavers aged 16 with the opportunity to learn new skills and help the community. This could give youngsters a taste for aiding others and encourage them to take a TEFL course.
Once a teenager has contributed positively to their own community, they may wish to help another community abroad and teach English before finding work or going to university.
The government plans to run a pilot scheme of the service at the end of the exam period next summer and offer up to 10,000 places to 16-year-olds for outdoor challenges or visiting and aiding the local community.
Mike Locke, director of public affairs for Volunteering England, said: “I think it is going to be an attractive scheme.
”It has gone down well with the pilot project, and I think it has got the components that will draw young people in."
He added that good numbers of young people are already volunteering but this project will give others the chance to as well.
