Myanmar opens up border for travellers

Posted 27 Feb 2009

Gap year travellers in China can now extend their trips to take in the sights of neighbouring Myanmar.

Visas-on-arrival will be available for tourists entering by road from Teng Chong, in China’s south-western Yunnan province, as well as by air, reports the Xinhua news agency.

The move means important cultural and historic sites like Mandalay and the ancient city of Bagan will now be easily accessible.

Normally, cross-border tourists from China are allowed to travel up to Myitkyina only, with a formal visa required for deeper travel into the country.

However, the Myanmar government is keen to rejuvenate dwindling tourism figures, which dropped almost 25 per cent in the first nine months of last year compared to 2007.

In related news, one of China’s most untouched landscapes was also recently opened to a limited number of travellers.

Keke Xili in Qinghai province will now welcome a maximum of 1,000 visitors a year, in a bid to protect its unspoiled scenery.
