More than a fifth of young people out of work

Posted 16 Feb 2011

More than a fifth of 16 to 24-year-olds are out of work, which is the highest level since records began.

The latest official figures, which were released today (February 16th), revealed that 965,000 young people were out of work in the three months ending December 2010.

This is an increase from 600,000 in the previous three months. It was also found that unemployment as a whole increased by 44,000 to reach 2.49 million Brits out of work.

Martina Milburn, chief executive of the Prince's Trust, told BBC News: "There are now enough unemployed young people to fill every football stadium in the Premier League, with almost 200,000 left queuing outside."

She described the situation as having a "devastating impact" on young people and their families.

If a young person is struggling to find work they may want to improve their employability by taking a TEFL course and picking up valuable skills while teaching English abroad.

A recent survey by Totaljobs.com found that 38 per cent of the graduates polled have had to claim Jobseekers Allowance since leaving university.
