More student protests expected in January

Posted 31 Dec 2010

Students are expected to protest against a rise in tuition fees and education cuts in January.

It is thought that these protests will be held on January 29th and February 19th as young people want to urge vice-chancellors not to raised tuition fees to £9,000 at their establishments.

From 2012, universities will be able to charge £9,000 tuition so long as they make provisions for poorer students but higher education establishments can also choose to increase their fees to £6,000.

Aaron Porter, president of the National Union of Students, told the Guardian that the increase in tuition fees may have been passed in parliament but students will continue to protest against this.

He is quoted as saying: "We expect to see continued student protests, sit-ins and petitions in the new year."

If universities choose to charge £9,000 a year in tuition than people from poorer backgrounds may be put off from obtaining a degree.

If so they may like to choose an alternative way into employment, such as a TEFL course, which trains people to teach English abroad.

TEFL course specialists have recently witnessed a surge in the number of people applying to take one due to the current job market.
