More mature gap years, which may involve teaching English abroad, are being taken.
That is according to Adam Pembrey, marketing co-ordinator at GapForce, who also stated that people of all ages are choosing to take a year out.
He said: "A lot of people in-between years at university, people that have just finished university and are taking a year out before employment.
"We are also getting quite a number of enquiries from people who are 27 or over who want to take a career sabbatical because of the way the job market is and so on."
Therefore, people of all ages may want to take a career break and travel abroad, which they can achieve through taking a TEFL course.
A TEFL course trains people to teach English abroad, which means the participant can gain new skills and earn money while seeing a different part of the world.
The demand for TEFL courses has increased in places such as Ireland as people are looking for ways to live abroad, Cork Student News recently reported.
