More graduates delaying university to move abroad for a year

Posted 25 Aug 2010

Record numbers of graduates are heading abroad on their travels as a result of the current paucity of UK jobs.

That is according to a new survey by Travelex, which suggested that a spike in demand for its prepaid foreign currency cards is indicative of increased gap year activity.

Demand has increased by 65 per cent in the past year, with recent graduates from Britain making up a sixth of all its customers.

"Hardly surprising, given recent media reports revealing that leading universities are increasing the minimum grades required for entry, leaving many school leavers without a university place this year," the company noted.

With the pound standing in relatively strong stead against currencies from other countries, now could be a good time to teach English abroad for those delaying university by a year.

Natasha Owen, marketing director for travel company Real Gap Experience, said: "The number of university places available has been drastically cut and many would-be students have been forced to reconsider their plans."

She added that Thailand and South Africa are proving to be particularly popular destinations among gap year travellers.
