The TEFL services of a Chinese university have been utilised by monks for the very first time.
A total of 22 monks completed an eight-month language course at the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), according to Xinhua News Agency.
As well as brushing up their English skills, the students attended Buddhism classes – also conducted in English.
Sheng Jianyuan, director of the teaching and research office of the training department at SISU, told the news provider the TEFL instruction was important.
He said: "Increasing exchanges between China’s Buddhist circle and its overseas counterparts mean Chinese monks need better English skills."
The course was funded by the Shanghai Buddhist Association.
In other Chinese TEFL news, an anthology of US president Barack Obama’s speeches is proving a learning hit in the country.
Sinosplice.com reports the book claims to teach English using nine of the statesman’s most famous public addresses.
