Malaysia reviews TEFL policy

Posted 18 Jun 2009

The debate over TEFL services in schools is raging again in Malaysia, following the minister of education’s proposal that the language become a must-pass subject before youngsters receive their school leaver’s certificate.

Tan Sri Mauhyiddin hopes the initiative will reverse falling English standards in the country.

However, opponents claim the move would lead to a culture of failure for the important exams.

Yusri Mohamed, president of the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia, told Radio Australia’s Connect Asa programme: "There will be candidates who are otherwise able but, because of their weakness in English, will not be able to get the higher certificate of education."

He added that the idea should only be considered as a last resort.

In related news, immigration officials hoping to work in Australia will soon have to meet higher English language levels in order to secure a job.

VisaBureau.com reports migration agents will have to meet an overall English language competency level of 7.0 when applying for those positions.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19225662-ADNFCR
