Long-term unemployed ‘should upskill’ to ensure they can find work

Posted 23 Dec 2010

The long-term unemployed may find it hard to obtain work if they have been out of work for longer than a year.

That is according to Phil Flaxton, the chief executive of Work Wise UK, which aims to encourage the widespread adoption of smarter working practices.

He stated that they may find it hard as some employers will feel that the long-term unemployed have been out of the job market so long they have lost important skills.

He said: "Those that have been long-term unemployed are probably less attractive to employers then those that have been out of employment for a few weeks or a month or two."

One way in which someone could prove they are willing to work and gain skills is by taking a TEFL course and learning to teach English abroad.

By teaching English abroad a person can gain work experience and skills that will look impressive on a CV.

Mr Flaxton made these comments after the TUC revealed yesterday (December 22nd) that quarter of a million Brits have been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for over a year.
