Local language knowledge ‘not essential in TEFL jobs’

Posted 12 Mar 2010

It is not necessary for students to know the local language when they head to out to their host countries to teach English overseas, it has been asserted.

This may come as a relief for people travelling to exotic destinations where the native language does not even have the same written characters as English.

Speaking to the Herald Citizen, Misty Brown noted that people teaching English in Japan – where she is based – do not have to use the Japanese language at work.

She pointed out railways stations in the country almost always have announcements in English too, but it can be useful to pick up a few key words in the local language, such as being able to read the name of the city people are staying in.

Ms Brown remarked: "My recommendation to anyone choosing to go is to learn to read Hirigana and Katakana, the two phonetic syllabaries, before coming. It isn’t hard to do."

One student recently told the Daily Sundial that he sees his decision to teach English in Japan as a practical solution for him.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19667388-ADNFCR
