Keep passport safe to avoid having to replace it before moving abroad

Posted 08 Sep 2010

If you are planning to move overseas in order to teach English abroad soon, it may be worth finding your passport.

According to a new study by Holidayextras.com, two per cent of consumers lose their passport as they do not store it properly.

The firm revealed on September 7th that two per cent had lost their passports while on holiday and a further one per cent had had them stolen by pickpockets or burglars.

This may not seem like a high number but the majority of consumers do not keep their passports safe and could easily misplace them.

This could be detrimental for those planning to teach English abroad as a replacement can cost £70 and takes a few weeks to process.

Perhaps most worrying is that 25 per cent of consumers were not concerned about losing their passport and took no measures to keep it safe.

Mike Whiting, managing director of the company, said: "If your passport falls into the wrong hands it could not only be sold on the black market, but the details could be used for identity theft."

Replacements can be applied for through the Identity and Passport Office online.
