The economic downturn is fuelling careers in the classroom, the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) believes.
A spokesman for the organisation insists as unemployment figures soar, teaching is increasingly perceived as a safe option for both graduates and recently redundant workers.
The latter, in particular, are keen to sign up for teacher training courses in subjects relating to their expertise.
He explains: "People who may have been working in banking and have been made redundant, they actually have schools and university degrees that are applicable to specific courses like maths and science, so it seems like quite a popular career change option."
According to recent TDA statistics, one in ten workers is considering a career in teaching.
Applications for science are up 23 per cent this recruitment year to date compared to last year, while the number of people interested in teaching maths rose 25 per cent.
