A rising number of young Irish people are choosing to head abroad after completing their studies as the country’s economy suffers.
In a move that could see many taking extended breaks overseas and teaching TEFL courses to pay their way, research has found that a growing number of young people at university are choosing to head to foreign climes to undertake internships.
There are growing concerns in Ireland that many of the young people heading abroad will choose not to come back, finding better opportunities in other countries, the Irish Times reports.
However, for those looking to escape the poor economic situation in Ireland for the short-term, taking a gap year after university and heading overseas to take on a TEFL course could offer a middle ground.
The Irish economy has suffered significantly in recent months as the global recession has taken hold. The country’s success of recent years was built largely on the back of a booming property market, but as that sector collapsed the whole economy has felt the pinch.
