TEFL teachers heading to India could find their work easier than anticipated thanks to a new English language rule at weekends.
According to the Indian Express, Gujarati schools in rural areas are being encouraged to use the language in conversation every Saturday.
It is hoped the initiative, which extends to communications with family and friends as well as in a classroom setting, will encourage pupils to practise their oral skills.
The Surat District Primary Education Officer has asked teachers to explain the meaning of common English words to facilitate the scheme.
In related news, a recent conference on TEFL teaching methods in India has placed emphasis on harnessing technology in lessons.
A seminar held in conjunction with the University of Cambridge and the British Council in Chennai earlier this month saw experts advocate using social networking sites and blogs to boost progress in the subject, the Express News Service reports.
