The Indian government is hoping its large investment in technology for TEFL lessons will ultimately boost the country’s economy.
The Times of India reports that 22,000 schools will benefit from the programme in Gujarat, which will see language classes telecast by teachers from Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Application and Geo-informatics (BISAG) in Gandhiangar via a satellite.
To facilitate the initiative, all schools in the region will receive a 42-inch LCD or plasma screen TV to view the lessons.
The scheme is expected to commence by the end of 2009 and experts hope it will also solve the shortage of quality TEFL teachers in the country.
In other Indian TEFL news, teachers may find a growing number of job vacancies in New Delhi ahead of the Commonwealth Games there next year.
News reports suggest beggars in the city are particularly keen to brush up on their language skills to make the most of the influx of foreign visitors expected for the sporting extravaganza.
