India ‘slipping behind on English language skills’

Posted 18 Nov 2009

Those teaching English in India could be doing the country a service, as a new report has outlined that the country is falling behind others when it comes to its proficiency in the language.

Commissioned by the British Council, the paper found that India is suffering from a shortage of English language teachers in India.

It added that this is hindering its progress in an international context, as there is an increasing demand for English language skills among companies.

Author of the paper David Gradoll stated: "China may already have more people who speak English than India. The rate of improvement in the English language skills of the Indian population is at present too slow."

In particular, the report outlined the quality of English in universities as a problem, deeming it to be "poor".

Earlier this month, the Times of India reported that those graduates who have no English language abilities will find it difficult to find work in the Asian country.
