Hong Kong is a ‘gateway to mainland China’

Posted 19 Aug 2010

TEFL-qualified people moving to China in order to teach English could consider stopping off in Hong Kong on the way.

On August 15th, Hong Kong International Airport revealed its figures for July, which showed that passenger numbers had increased by 17.5 per cent to 4.7 million.

Furthermore, China itself witnessed a 29 per cent increase in its visitor numbers in the past 12 months, the airport found.

Paul Jeffels, manager at Round the World Experts, attributes this increase to the fact that Hong Kong is an ideal stopover for people travelling to a number of locations including China and Australia.

He said: "Hong Kong is a good access point for China. We are finding that it is becoming more difficult for the independent traveller to obtain a visa for mainland China without having a tour or hotels pre-booked."

Therefore, TEFL-qualified people who want to teach English in China who are struggling to obtain a visa could start their trip in Hong Kong to make it easier.
