Hiddink learns the ‘dirty words’ first

Posted 29 May 2009

Learning how to swear is one of the first things football manager Guus Hiddink picks up when being taught foreign languages.

The Dutch tactician, who has recently been serving as Chelsea FC’s interim manager, said expletives and rude phrases were important to know to avoid being set up by players.

The former South Korea coach explains: "I didn’t speak Korean, though I learned a bit – the bad words always first!

"Koreans are almost too polite to do so, but the players always teach you the dirty words. They say: ‘When you talk to the president, use this word and that word’. So, all of a sudden, you have a president reacting: ‘How can this man say that?’"

His comments may be of interest to TEFL teachers looking for ways to engage their language students.

Meanwhile, Hiddink recently confessed that he still sometimes struggles to master the English language, telling the Telegraph that he often stumbles or has to have questions rephrased before answering them.ADNFCR-2167-ID-19192577-ADNFCR
