Travellers are becoming more discerning when it comes to picking volunteer projects abroad.
That is the opinion of Sallie Grayson, co-founder of people and places, who notes that young people are making more informed choices about the companies they sign up with before jetting off on extended travel.
Whether it be TEFL placements or conservation work, Ms Grayson says volunteers are increasingly aware that projects can vary widely between volunteer firms.
She explains: "We’re now seeing the kind of questions consumers were asking about fair trade goods and, before that, organic food they’re now beginning to ask those questions about volunteering. There is a real growth of understanding."
Her comments echo similar findings published by Good Business earlier this year.
A report entitled Concerned Consumers found almost three quarters of respondents doubted travel companies are going far enough to address social and environmental issues.
