Grammar is important when teaching English abroad

Posted 06 Sep 2010

A seminar was recently conducted in India by the British Council and A S Hornby Educational Trust, which examined the importance of grammar.

More than 40 people who are teaching English in India attended the event run by Rachel Bowden, who has over ten years experience in TEFL, reported the Hindu on September 6th.

The seminar was entitled Bringing Grammar to Life in the Secondary Classroom, and Ms Bowden passed on her own teaching experiences.

She said: "It is important to study grammar in the abstract sense but it is also very important that people are using it and they are exposed to it in a more real sense as well.

"Very often students come out of school having studied English for many years and they have a book full of grammar notes but they are unable to use it," quoted the news provider.

She believes that teachers should be dynamic in their approach to teaching grammar to their pupils and should ensure that the relationship does not become too formal, as this can be counter-productive.

People who take a TEFL course will learn how to teach English abroad and it includes several modules about grammar such as tenses and phonology.
